Maybe you are right. I don't know for sure what Lennon intended. But I don't 
think he meant that it would be a good idea for people to give away all their 
possessions or to criticize people who were unwilling to give their stuff away. 
That would have been rediculous since as you say, he didn't give away his 
possessions. Maybe you are right and Lennon was a hypocrit and stupid enough to 
make such an obvious display of it, but I always interpreted the line to mean 
"imagine if there were no such things as possessions"--that no one owned 
anything which would mean that everyone owns everything. I am pretty convinced 
that he was not stupid (but I'm also pretty sure that to some extent we are all 
hypocrits). His song is a pipe dream, but maybe a dream worth dreaming now and 
then?

But it must be nice to feel superior to people like John Lennon... How is that 
working out for you?
