Steven,

I didn't say Lennon was stupid. You need look no further than his lyrics
("love me do", "I wanna hold your hand", "Dear Prudence"...hell 90% of what
he wrote) and his trite pop music to know what a genius he was, but I don't
think his music, with a few notable exceptions, particularly Imagine and his
Christmas carol to Nixon, has aged very well. I like to "imagine" that when
they heard Led Zeppelin's music in the late 60's they decided to break up
before becoming more campy than they already were (Captain Beefheart exposes
the Beatles in his send up of "Strawberry Fields"), but my point is that it
was ironic that a billionaire was telling "average Joe's" to "imagine no
possessions", while increasing his possessions exponentially. Sorry to point
this out to you, but that is hypocritical.

Micah,

Maybe you are right. I don't know for sure what Lennon intended. But I don't
think he meant that it would be a good idea for people to give away all
their possessions or to criticize people who were unwilling to give their
stuff away. That would have been rediculous since as you say, he didn't give
away his possessions. Maybe you are right and Lennon was a hypocrit and
stupid enough to make such an obvious display of it, but I always
interpreted the line to mean "imagine if there were no such things as
possessions"--that no one owned anything which would mean that everyone owns
everything. I am pretty convinced that he was not stupid (but I'm also
pretty sure that to some extent we are all hypocrits). His song is a pipe
dream, but maybe a dream worth dreaming now and then?

But it must be nice to feel superior to people like John Lennon... How is
that working out for you?

Regards,
Steve
