You are both making a use/mention error: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use-mention_distinction Numbers are not words any more than home-runs are. 2 + 2 = 4, starts with a numeral, which is a symbol for a number, but is not itself a number, which in turn is not a word, otherwise we wouldn't need a symbol for it.
