Hi Krim

When criticising science it is always easy to be out of date,
and so yoiu end up shooting at something that has already
changed its spots.I certainly agree that much on the cutting
edge of science (as far as I can keep up) is under cutting
the sort of SOM positivism and absolutist claims that anti-scientism
attacks. That's great but I also know the struggles continue.
A thought: how readily do scientists accept the need to interpret
all data, that facts only exist within an interpretative context?
Somehow we ask nature questions, nature answers, but there is
no language of nature, so we have to interpret in meaningful ways
whatever strange gestures/responses nature makes to our peculiar
questions. Now, when it comes to interpretations, there are an
infinite number of possible ones to choose from. Do most scientists
fully accept this problem? I know many do, but do most? Actually
scientists are notoriously useless at philosophy of science.

I would say this is exactly the point I have been trying to make for a
slightly different angle. I think phenomenologically we need to understand
how it is that we have experiences or if you prefer how "we" are
differentiated by experience. I think understanding how we detect patterns
and make meaning is important and I think the neuroscience have a great
deal
to add to the discussion.

DM: I agree that we should get whatever insights we can from science. But it

Adds to the enquiry it should not be seen as the only form of enquiry.

[Krimel]
As you well know science is much better at telling us what is not rather
than what is. We now know, to give a classic example, that all swans are not white. I think the most rabid critics of science on this forum fear science
because it has in many cases it has already written off as false many of
their cherished assumptions.
