Hi Craig,
[Mary said] DQ is undefined. That means you can't make any claims about it at all. You can't say what it is or isn't, and you can't compare or analogize it With anything that is known. Any and all words reduce it immediately to something it is not. Correct? [Craig] IMHO not correct. DQ is undefined because it cannot be analyzed (into more fundamental terms), but that doesn't mean it cannot talked about. Talking about whatever does not change it. [Mary] Talking about a concept does change it to the extent that I can convince you I'm right, I guess. About all I'm comfortable saying about DQ is that it is the source of all SQ and that it is undefined. [Mary said] He goes to great pains to explain that all reality is SQ [Craig] Reality = DQ + SQ (see Pirsig, SODV) [Mary] He also said somewhere that the 4 static levels are all inclusive. He said they contain everything and nothing is left out. [Craig] DQ cannot be free will, because Pirsig's example of DQ (jumping off a hot stove) is INvoluntary. Nor is DQ evolution, because it is SQ that exhibits evolution from level to level. [Mary] Agree entirely, Craig. Thanks for the conversation.
