(Pirsig, "Lila") Note that Pirsig does not say that pursuing static patterns is behaving without choice. It is only without choice if static patterns CONTROL your behavior. Also though FOLLOWING DQ is behaving freely, it doesn't mean that there aren't other ways to behave freely.
