Hi Dan, Dave (and Mark) Dan, disingenuous in the sense you claimed not to know "what" he was talking about, whereas you were actually disagreeing with him (as I do, as any MoQist would). Anyway, we got there in the end. I know you've indulged Mark for a while.
Since Dave faced the implied "God" word head-on, I thought I might comment on that. It is easy (metaphorically / analogically as Dave says) to see the godhead / buddha in the ineffable quality. The ineffability itself is enough to draw the analogy. Pirsig does it all over the place. But, substituting the word "God" for quality or vice-versa is one thing, so long as were clear it is actually the quality we're talking about. Seeing the grey-bearded, omniscient, omnipotent, intentional being of mono-theistic religions in the word is quite another. To avoid confusion we (obviously) avoid or take great care using the word in the MoQ context. (Just another example of broad vs narrow definition issues really - which I think Dave also said). Mark the question is still where are you going with your thinking. (But don't fall into the trap of falsely claiming where you're going is what Pirsig was thinking. Although Dan considers me "polite" you'll find I don't have nearly as much patience as Dan.) Ian PS - What's so funny 'bout ... Peace, love and understanding ? Where are the strong, and Who are the trusted ?
