Wasn't his uncle not a vassal, but hiding luke?
Luke and liela were hidden from their father. Their
father was not only destroying himself, and became
dependent upon technology to breath, etc..., and also
anger for power to control, but turned against his
wife who would give birth to their children. He
almost killed his wife until a jedi, young Ben Knobi,
intervened to stop Vader. Vader believed that he was
saving the empire. That with more control the empire
could once again prosper. Yet, with mind's-eye
dimming, anger and fear engulfing his perspective he
could no longer sense this force that provided
clarity, wisdom and understanding about what truly was
the state of the universe. He was killing and ridding
all relationships, pushing them away, to control - a
do anything for power and control of how ones ideal's
are to be instilled in this universe, thus:

being in tuned with how the universe is versus how
one person thought the universe SHOULD be.

Vader was no longer alert and aware of the
universe without fear, anger, and pain guiding his
rational to come down hard on all that faced the
emperor.

Luke did make a choice. Ben Knobi said he was
needed to go and help the rebels. Luke was leaning
towards no, but then all that Luke would stay behind
to help - was gone. His world just got bigger.
