For me the explanation is pretty well covered in Lila, Chapters 22 and 24. 
Intellectuals failed to see the role of hard-nosed social patterns in holding 
the
forces of "feel good" biology at bay. As a result, the doors of "anything goes"
were open, and the fun and games of sex and drugs roared in. Those who were(and 
are)
the pied pipers of this lifestyle are today's celebrities who many secretly envy
for their freedom to pursue debauchery without suffering consequences, except 
for
an occasional stay in rehab.
