I have used this method for several years and it works for me. I have one
non-spiral composition book for each student in my 1st grade class. I keep
these in a "special" basket. When I am listening to kids do their first read
on a new book in guided reading, I take anecdotal records (including the name
of the book and the date). When I take a running record on a child, I keep it
in this composition book. I also use these for writing workshop conferences.

This works for me because I am going to lose loose pieces of paper or pages
of labels! The kids know where these are kept (by my place where I work with
small groups), so if I am working with a child and don't have their composition
book, they can go get it quickly for me.
