Fluency Rating Scale Record Form

Directions:
Choose a text at the student’s instructional level. (Previously-read  
silently)

The text should be a narrative text of approximately 100 words.

A Rigby text can be used for this purpose. (Conduct the Fluency Test  
with the Rigby)

It is NOT necessary to time the reading. Fluency rating can be taken  
during guided reading.
Reading should be at a reasonable pace (like talking).

Document the child’s behavior on the Fluency Rating Recording Form.

·       word-by-word

·       some two and three word phrases

·       author’s meaning is generally not maintained

·       without expression or intonation

·       seems labored and difficult


Level 2:
·       two-word phrases

·       occasional three- or four- word phrases.

·       Some word-by-word reading

·       word groupings may be awkward and unrelated to the larger  
context of the sentence or passage

·       little or inappropriate expression or intonation


Level 3:
·       three-or four- word phrases

·       smaller phrases may be present

·       most of the phrasing is appropriate and preserves the  
author’s meaning

·       Some appropriate expression and intonation


Level 4:
·       longer, meaningful phrases

·       preserves the author’s meaning

·       Most of the text is read with appropriate expression and  
intonation

·       A sense of ease is present in the reader’s oral presentation
