I borrowed the following ideas from my first district. I organized all the
books in bookrooms in each of the 4 elementary schools. We took the books
already in the bookroom, and added books from our textbook loan.

Here is what I did.

The books are organized according to the Fountas & Pinnell levels.
All books were entered into a data base that contained pertinent fields.

A set of about 6 books were placed in a plastic bag. The bag had the title,
level, and a strategy (if I could identify one).
(The labels were easy to print out using the data base.)

The bags were placed alphabetically by level in plastic bins. The bins were
then placed on shelves, and the shelves were identified as to the level. Each
book had a yellow cardstock title card so teachers could easily identify the
title. (Again, these were printed using the data base.)

When we first started, teachers would place a labeled clothespin on the card.
The second year, the teachers just took out the books. We did lose some, but it
wasn't worth it to ask teachers to go through the librarian. Since first grade
teachers sometimes take out 12 titles a week, we needed an easy, quick system.

Luckily, I was able to convince the admin to have someone reshelve the titles.
Each building had a library assistant, and that job was added to their duties.
Some weren't happy, but one of them did a wonderful job!

Subject: [MOSAIC] Book Room

As the end of the year approaches I am thinking about the reorganization of our
Reading Bookroom. This room houses all of our leveled text for kindergarten
through grade four. I am hoping for some ideas on how to reorganize the space
so teachers can access materials quickly. Is your bookroom organized by level?
Genre? Author? Theme? Curricula? What system do you use to keep track of books
borrowed and returned? Do you have a bibliography?
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!
Carol
