I can see that causing confusion. To the average user, why should the
exit time of the program be connection to the ammount[1] of stuff in
their trash folder. Whereas emptying the trash is an action that you
might expect to take longer with a larger trashcan.
I don't see compacting folders as doing something "behind the user's
back". It's just a time-consuming 2nd step in moving (or deleting) a
message. You're getting rid of something they don't have direct access
to anyway. From within Mozilla, there's no visible change for the user.
