So where were these people when Carol Johnson was appointed
in a similar process? 

I haven't had time to compose a more comprehensive post, but
to comment quickly:  The lack of an "advanced" degree in
education should not be a liability.  Indeed, the opposite might
be true because of the need to conform in order to make it 
though the system. I once asked a nationally known educational 
historian if they knew of any educational departments in the
country that promoted free and open discussion ... they responded 
negatively (If you know of any please email me, I'm looking
for a job).

What is important is an understanding of contemporary educational 
policies and their alternatives.  What worried me about  
Mr. Jennings was that he did not appear to be knowledgeable
and he stated that he was going to continue with Dr. Johnson's
ineffective polices.

BTW, why shouldn't public education be under attack?
