I would hope that the dollars collected from the potential cameras would be used to
hire more police officers. I have almost been hit several times by folks speeding
through the red light.
Maybe the cameras could capture other activity going on in the area.

Subject: [Mpls] Red Light Cameras

It looks like Minneapolis could get red light cameras sometime in 2005. This
afternoon the Public Safety and Regulatory Services Committee voted 4-0
(Niziolek, Colvin Roy, Johnson, Samuels) to move a proposed red light camera
ordinance forward. CM Colvin Roy indicated she receives more complaints regarding
speeding and red light running than any other issue except the airport
noise. CMs Niziolek and Johnson said they receive a substantial number of speeding
and red light running complaints. CM Samuels said he is willing to give red
light cameras a try but he is concern about potential legal challenges.
Opponents to the ordinance testified that it raised a number of privacy and due
process issues and that it was a mere drivers tax revenue raiser.
