OK. Here's the latest:

Using the motherboard serial port has cured the line drops, but the length
of
the cable isn't making any difference. My Surf Squirrel is still dropping
the line
straight after connection even with just a standard modem serial cable
( 1m ).
Something bizzare is going on because the Surf has been working with this
modem, and this cable plus an extension cable from the inside of my tower
to the rear, with no problems at all - until now.
The obvious answer would be that the Surf is goosed, but it is working
faultlessly transferring files between the A1200 and a PC, using two
terminal
programs and the ZModem protocol. Surely there can't be a hardware fault?
I'm absolutely stumped, and not willing to suffer the sluggishness of the
A1200
motherboard port for any length of time.

So in short:
The cables are fine.
The modem is fine.
The Surf Squirrel is fine.
Genesis is fine.
But using the Surf ( used to work! ) but now drops the line.

Can anybody offer any miracle cures?

Cheers,
