If the DTR, RTS, CTS etc leads were duff, the mdem probably wouldn't
even dial or log in. This can be easily checked with selecting
Xon-Xoff transmission type which should disable all handshaking.

This is a good point.  I believe you can switch carrier detect on and
off. Somewhere....
