There doesn't appear to be a way of opening it without breaking it.
The plastic case is all bonded together. I'd rather not break it just
to find that the problem is nothing obvious at all. Afterall the SCSI
side of things still works fine so I'll keep it handy for emergencies.
I fancy 2 fast serial ports and a faster parallel port anyway, so a
GoldSurfer looks quite attractive. Thanks for the concern though.

I've tried 2 cables, both of which work fine with the same modem on
a PC, so it isn't the cable.

Cripes! How the hell did I miss that??? Unfortunately it doesn't
make any difference. It is supposed to ignore the Carrier Detect signal
from the modem, so if that was the problem then un-checking this
should work. However it doesn't make any difference so either
the problem is with another line on the SurfSquirrel or that particular
"feature" of Genesis doesn't actually work. Take your pick, as either
possibility seems equally likely to me having used various guises of
NetConnect over the years. ( Sorry if you think that's a pop at you
Mr.Wiles. Unlike most other people, I don't blame you personally for
every problem or bug to the point where contracts are put out for your
assassination. ;-)
Anyway, I've tried just about everything with this SurfSquirrel apart from
plugging it into another A1200, but I haven't got access to another
A1200 so I can't. I'll just have to admit defeat on this one. On the
bright side, my PCMCIA port is now freed up for a ethernet card
to get some serious networking going between the Miggy and the
PeeCee.
