This could still be a hardware problem. You do not need all the data lines when
using a nullmodem cable, normally just RTS , CTS and the data lines (or just
the data lines with xoff/on handshake if you are using the bare minnimum).
So you only need four signal lines working to get two computers talking to each
other without modems.

You may have a duff DTR line from the computer, check that the TR led on your
modem is staying lit all the time ( It sould light up as soon as you start
genesis) depending on how your modem is set up this can reset the modem / drop
the line or ignore incommig calls. Also the CD line input could be duff, if this
was floating it could make genesis think the line has been droped.
