Is that due to serial port differences, or some other firmware
difference? All use the same CIAs and Paula to drive the port, I suspect
this driver relies on some A1200 trickery.

How can their implementation be wrong when they invented them and set
the standards. We didn't even have mice until Microsoft invented them...

The mouse port adaptor is better anyway, you don't need a separate
mouse for early-startup stuff.
