What about SYS:Expansion? I've not used a GVP card, but the Multiface
has a file in Expansion. This creates the serial driver in memory when
BindDrivers is run. duart.device shows up in any driver list, even
though there's no such file in DEVS:

Surely using redirection disables the original serial port?

Serial mice use any standard serial port, either on the I/O card or the
motherboard port.
