Subject: Re: Poll on buying Nettamer PPP socket (was - will someone remind me
John Ramm said ...How much work is involved for Uncle Dave to present
this socket as a stand-alone application? ... I am asking because I'm
not a programmer and I simply don't know the answer. ...
John:
Since 1983 I have been a software and hardware project manager and
VAR-Integrator who has paid technicians to integrate those things into
customer specific solutions. I do not have any answer as to the
modularity of the internal components in the Nettamer application.
Academic programming courses say that the "good programming technique"
is to make your application completely modular and then each component
is able to be used as a standalone.
My experience is actual functioning applications are rarely totally
modular when the customer wants the application to do something that was
not in the original design parameters.
Sometimes magazine articles about programming techniques comment on a
programmer using "spaghetti coding techniques". What they mean is, if
you touch one line of the code it will create a major problem in another
part of the applications code.
My experience has been that most programmers prefer to build each
application for a specific standalone purpose. Because they can take
advantage of their own evolving increase in programming skills as well
as the evolving programming tools - many times the customers want an
older designed application to work with new computer hardware and newly
introduced computer languages which allow creative solutions.
I'm not sure how much of the above will apply to Uncle Dave and building
a Nettamer PPP "socket" as a stand-alone shareware product.
Regarding the final sale price for a "Nettamer PPP "socket" as a
stand-alone shareware product"; Uncle Dave is probably not going to do
any of this for altruism. The present version of Nettamer does a
specific job.
The application that Heimo suggested (Nettamer PPP "socket" as a
stand-alone shareware product) will do some similar things IF other
applications can be used in conjunction with the new product.
IMO a new "Nettamer PPP "socket" as a stand-alone shareware product" is
going to be worth a new and separate registration fee.
FYI - In Silicon Valley a DOS embedded systems programmers capable of
doing what Uncle Dave could do with the existing Nettamer source code to
build a "Nettamer PPP "socket" as a stand-alone shareware product" would
expect to be well paid for that labor and creativity.
Sorry if I have probably said more about this than many people are
interested in reading.
Obviously the "ball is now in Uncle Dave's court".
Thus, only David Colston can answer your questions regarding what it
will take to build, and, what he will charge for a "Nettamer PPP
"socket" as a stand-alone shareware product" based on the existing
Nettamer application's source code.
I think there is interest and buyers for the final product if it does
most of what Heimo previously outlined.
