Bonnie:
PPP is Point-to-Point-Protocol; it's the communications process
used to attach your computer to the INTERNET and manage the transfer
of data back and forth between your computer and the INTERNET. It is
said that this is done by opening and closing "sockets." When first
created, Net-Tamer was one of the few INTERNET utilities for DOS
that, in essence, transparently incorporated the process of
establishing a PPP connection into an INTERNET program that did more
than establish such a connection. Other INTERNET programs -- such as
mailers and web browsers -- forced you to obtain a SEPARATE PPP
"driver" which you'd have to install and link to your browser or
mailer. Installing such software was almost always complicated and
required more than a passing knowledge of how the INTERNET and ISPs
function on a technical level. The process was difficult or tedious
enough before you'd get to installing a second program -- a
newsreader, E-Mail client, or whatever. In order for the second
program to function properly -- to communicate with the INTERNET --
it would have to work directly with a PPP driver program. Arachne is
a good example of INTERNET software that does not stand alone. It
must be setup to load a PPP driver which in turn does all the real
communication with the INTERNET. The usefulness of the proposed PPP
socket driver is dependent on how much of a bit-twiddler -- a
software and INTERNET veteran comfortable with setting up software in
a complex manner -- you are, and how much of a bit-twiddler the
software would require you to be to properly set it up and link it
with OTHER software.
