I'll be a little more succinct ..

1) load mandriva

2) boot mandriva

3) HARD disk spins and spins and spins .. (during this time you can do
things but the disc spins and spins and spins .. )

I had expected problems with the wireless myself and there are lots of
posts about it and can be worked through .. The HD problem could
probably be worked through with enough work.

I just didn't have time to tweak a lot of bits .. you will note that
my original post, and even those after (except for the type bit) did
not and does not put down Linux or Mandriva. (well probably the
'world works on .. ')

I asked a question on how to uninstall mandriva .. seemed pretty
simple to me .. but there you go

thanks

This line must be inaccurate or misleading. If it just spins and spins how do
you know the wireless doesn't work? It must have stopped spinning at some
point and installed Mandriva. Right?

Wireless stuff can be a problem. The problem is simply that the manufacturers
don't create drivers for linux. You can try Ndiswrapper as an alternative. If
you've been using Windows for awhile drivers were a problem for windows
hardware also. They have whole websites just to help users find drivers.

Although I haven't had problems with XP I did have problems with hardware with
earlier versions of windows even though the docs said it was supposed to
work.
