How do you Uninstall Mandriva? How do you get rid of the 'Lilo'"
I kept it very short because i have been hammered before on *linux*
sites whenever the mention of windows is made .. so tried to keep it
short and to the point .. that was wrong
thanks .. i get it now ..
1) be very specific
2) don't ever mention windows, xp or ..
Well, in the interest of clarity and fairness, there are quite a few
list-members (including those who will never admit it! LOL!) who use
Windows, albeit only for a few apps now and then or when they're at
work, so mentioning Windows and even using it (is it OK to use the words
'Windows' and 'usable' in the same sentence? Snicker!) still continues
to be one of life's ironic twists of fate to some of us.
Besides, if there weren't a few folks out there still using it, who
would we be able to pick on? Mac Users? Hmmm, now there's a thought!
Grin! Especially now that they can run WindowsXP on Mac's! I ask you,
can things get any better?? Nothing like fresh meat for the table!
However, I digress.
You did mention that you wanted to run Windows on your system David and
if you'd like, I can quote from your original email if you'd like me to,
but for the sake of efficiency I'll just let it ride. Since the fact
that you wanted to run Windows on your system was obvious, the
information you've already received would have allowed you to accomplish
both at the same time, without wasted steps and many methods were suggested.
I'd be willing to bet that on whatever sites that Windows users go to,
there are a number of them who drop in and ask how to install Windows,
without providing any information about their systems, only to be told
that they can't run WindowsXP on a 486 SX.
In order to save time, most folks would probably have provided some
indication of the Mandriva version they were having troubles with as
well as a brief description of their system (and by brief, I mean more
information than 'my laptop').
Also, there are several sites dedicated to Linux on laptops and they
could have probably made several recommendations (in addition to "all
the idiots here") had they received sufficient information.
Therefore, specifics are kinda necessary when it comes to your equipment
because otherwise, people can only guess at what your problem might
really be. The end result of that would/could be the types of
non-helpful replies that you've seen here.
But, it's OK to mention Windows here if you like, but only on Mondays,
and Thursdays unless it's a leap year, in which case you can mention
Windows ONLY on February 29th. Good thing it's Monday here in Montreal.
Oh, and for the record, I didn't say that you insinuated, I said that
you 'implied', specifically.
Now suck it up my fellow Canadian and apologise to these good people,
then try asking us again and I'm sure someone will be able to help you
with your Linux-related problems. If you still need help getting it off
your laptop, then explain what you need in detail and we can go from there.
For example;
1) Is Mandriva the only OS on your system, or not?
2) If not, then it must be on a secondary partition, yes?
3) If so, do you want to keep the Windows install intact or do a fresh
install?
4) If you want to keep it on your system, then all you have to do is to
use the first Mandriva CD as suggested earlier to restore your Windows
bootup. Yes, I said your WINDOWS bootup (as in Master Boot Record),
after which you can delete the Mandriva partitions and create one extra
partition for extra Windows storage using the Disk management tools
found by right-clicking the My Computer icon and selecting 'Manage' from
the list.
5) If you want to start from scratch with Windows, then also proceed
with a fresh install of Windows - it will give you options to obliterate
Mandriva in the process of installing and it will deal with Lilo at the
same time.
etc, etc.
Hope that clears things up a tad and have a nice day.
