IMO, the Willys Jeeps were a lot better than the ones that carry that name now. Chrysler has the only survivor, because they stopped selling used Willys when some jerk lawyer going for the deep pocket sued over it flipping (because of the independent rear suspension with a swing axle, something like the old VWs.), and won over $1million. I think the driver died; so who got all the money?... I have driven both; the Willys was a lot lot more comfortable of a ride and better handling, so long as you didn't go over its cornering speed limit, or else put a limiter on the swing axles... Jeep comes from the initials, GP, which meant general purpose, and referred in this instance to a vehicle, of general purpose. VWs were the German "Jeep," and were called "Kübelwagens. " We received them with the name, "Thing. "
