It refers to the replacement of, usually, bearings, rings, related and
appropriate gaskets, valve guides, and other worn parts. This is in the usual
cases of age without serious neglect and/or abuse.
Include the case of these machines, I would change the timing chain and
tensioner & guides as long as it's apart.
This includes valves & seats resurfacing also.
BTW: while a comp ck doesn't specifically tell you it's the valves or rings,
one can usually conclude with logical accuracy if only one cylinder is low and
the rest are high, it's a valve; if all are equally low, it's likely the rings.
To further confirm it's rings, squirt oil in the cylinders one at a time and so
the comp ck; if the readings of that comp ck are higher it is rings.
Rings wear rather evenly; it's not likely that the valves will do the same but
the results of the second ck will give you a fairly accurate conclusion without
either the $300 for exploratory surgery or the tools required for a leakdown
test.

Maybe I should have been more specific. MODERN sport bikes, ones with fairings
and rev higher than 10,000 RPM. I don't really consider the 700S as a sport
bike like a CBR or interceptor more of a sporty standard. But I guess back in
its day it was considered one.

some do have hydraulic lifters (tappets) such as the Nighthawk cb700sc
