But now I digress... Short version: Ben has been scapegoated. Less short version: The sacrifice of an individual in the name of a cause dehumanizes all involved. That a sacrifice is often used to cement a mob to a new or existing power structure is a recurring motif. That the individual selected for sacrifice is usually one already marked by some difference is also often seen. That the mob thereafter insists the victim deserved their fate is always seen.
