Hi Folk Last week when I heard it, it sounded like a mobile electricity council power plant, as what we heard for a few days when Scott and surrounds had a major power cable fault about year and a bit ago, and the power plant was hooked up to the grid on Campbell and Scott Road? But alas ......
A good few years ago a very similar noise continued for a year or so, which I stared investigating at night when it could be heard, thus lead me to the Main road areas. The noise was clearly prevalent during winter and not summer. Reason that when the N wind blew we heard the sound bouncing back off the mountain and clouds onto Obs, the sound would pick up or die down depending on the wind intensity. When the S/E blew in summer it would be swept away to Cape Town and with no bouncing off the sun or atmosphere, as it was too far to bother about (Jokes). I first thought it was Chippies on the Main Road, and was not popular with them for a while as I had them check out their extractor motors etc, and made my apology to them. My first encounter with City Health re the noise disturbance was that it was not loud enough dB's to warrant action, if I recall correctly. I then scouted higher up and found it coming from GSH but had difficulty locating it as I was right under the sound and could not always hear it from there, but with a cardboard pipe in hand found my way up the slopes: - The Incinerator plant at GSH was thought to be the problem, a high thin towards the N/W of the hospital adjacent the Moslem Cemetry in Browning Road, chimney being the spot of origin at the base plant, which made a similar noise, but the frequency was different. - I then scouted lower down again and found an exhaust stack at the new South Wing closest to the Main Road, enquired from the resident along Mandith Court across the road from it, but they could not hear it, the sound traveled over them and dumped onto Obs behind them. - I could not get close to the place as fenced off and started to contact the technical Department at GSH, to investigate. - They thought it was a turbine or motor needing maintenance, but could only schedule it the following year, that's if memory serves me well. - But as the frequency of the exhaust stack matched my ear I made further complaint. It was subsequently found that the GSH aircon system chamber filter plant ducts had a faulty door and could not be fully shut or something, and apparently gave rise to the disturbance.
