I just dont get this whole "WotC owns the OGL"
problem.
The OGL is the tool by which WotC releases d20 SRD
content to d20 producers. That was what it was
designed for. So OBVIOUSLY WotC needs to own it so
they can maintain control over its terms. Why would
anyone make a license to handle the distribution of
their IP and then give up control over that license?
That is rediculous.
If it troubles anyone that WotC owns the license, then
make your own license and call it the Free Game
License or the Universal Game License.
And I dont understand this "solution" that Ryan should
have the copyright to the license. If Ryan leaves WotC
and goes to a new company, that company can make a new
Open Game License.
There is no rule that there can only be one Open Game
License in the game world.
For example, Faust put out his open games. He didnt
have to use the WotC Open Game license. He could have
make his own license regarding how he wanted his game
to be used. Or he could simply have put some copyright
disclaimer on the game, ie: "Copyright Faust, but
Faust hereby disclaims that copyright and puts the
contents of this game forever into the public domain."
That is the most "open game" ever.
Maybe I just dont get it...
