Well, other than the bit about the astral plane, that's exactly how
spells are done in 3rd edition D&D. You cast 99% of the spell (that's what
you're doing in the morning with your spellbook, rather than "memorizing"
it) and leave out a few key phrases. When you cast the spell, you're
"filling in" the parts you left out that morning.
