I disagree. I think that the advancement mechanism is definitely one of the
key areas where Earthdawn is better than D&D. Only one of them, admittedly.

It just makes a lot more sense. One gradually gains in power in Earthdawn
as one gains experience. After awhile, one is capable of learning entirely
new skills/spells/gifts. While keeping the benefits of a class/level system
it eliminates the main conceptual problem that a character suddenly jumps
in a whole bunch of skills, including ones they haven't used recently.
