Except for those characters who in ED deliberatly traded going up in levels
fast for being good at one thing. One of my players decided to stay at level
2 until after the rest of the party were 4-6 level by raising only two or
three of his talents and thus not making the requirements for level 3.
You also get character improvement [raising a skill] much more frequently
than you get level gain, thus the players feel rewarded more frequently.
