You hit on exactly my big problem with d20 initially.

I was worried that WotC would let us make our modules,
see which 1 or 2 really sold well then publish them
themselves all slick and fancy and drive us out.

I got Ryan to specifically post that such conduct
would not happen. In fact, some tinkering was done
with early versions of the license so taht couldnt
happen.
