[Winona Online Democracy]

Dear Paul and Others,
In all truth, I do not mind paying taxes. I
wouldn't mind even paying more! Why? I believe very
strongly that the health of a community and of a state
has to do with the services provided to make life
decent for all of its citizens. These services are
many: the care of people with disabilities, people
with mental disabilities, the education of the people
including higher education, roads, police, fire,
medical benefits, et cetera.
I have lived in many states and Minnesota is my
favorite so far. Why? They do a good job of taking
care of their ciitzens who need extra help. I have
lived in states like Missouri and Louisiana where I
paid much lower taxes, but how the people suffered!
Greater crime rates, very poor nursing homes, poor
care of people with disabilities, and on and on..
Are all our taxes spent well? Probably not, as
government is run by human beings who both make
mistakes and sometimes have less than admirable
motives. For the most part, however, these "errors"
are few and definitely worth the benefits.
I go to bed at night knowing that at least in
this state, things aren't so bad for those less
fortunate than I. I am grateful that Minnesota sees
fit to allocate, for the most part, sufficient funds
to make this state a better state to live in.
I, for one, will continue to pay my taxes even
joyfully. I do not want a refund. The extra monies
should be used more wisely such as saving for a rainy
day.
