Documented Video Project ?
My philosophy has been to show focus first, and then broaden when you
can do it safely. I believe there's value in remaining a "Graphics"
project for a few reasons. One is that it's a sore spot in the FOSS
community, moreso than for any other kind of peripheral, and it will
always be that kind of issue. The other is that it shows that we're
not getting distrated by so many neat ideas that we never actually
make anything. Once the Graphics side has been established, we can
create another "Project" that does "everything else," but we should
always have the Graphics project as an anchor.
How about Open Documented Graphics Initiative, and for the other
projects
we could use Open Documented Project Initiative?
Or just Documented Graphics Initiative/Documented Project Initiative.
(I prefer the second one just because it isn't quite as nasty to say,
but it also
might tote its crowning benefit strongly enough)
I don't think that just because some companies made a mistake and
started
selling stuff other than their original name would imply (think IBM,
International
Business Machines, as an example we are all familiar with) does not mean
that we should make the same mistake. I believe that if we change our
name,
it should be changed to something that can have a small substitution
and talk
about open hardware in general. This means that we won't be building
an SATA
controller as a Graphics Project device ;-) Then again, if the ...
Graphics ... name
gets really widespread recognition, it might be a selling point. That
is why we
should use a name that is similar enough that it is obvious the two
branches are
connected farther down the tree.
So, I essentially agree with you, but we should plan out our name
carefully right now
(while we still can!) so that this discussion doesn't come up again
when new projects
emerge.
