The german "Frei" has a couple of meanings, but "free as in free beer"
is not among them AFAIK (I'm a native speaker, without a dictionary :-).
I'm living nearby the Saarländer and I've got some friends in
Saarbrücken city, they say "Frei" in this economical sense. A lot of
advertisements use also "Frei" in this sense.
I think "frei" has several meanings in German and the economical meaning is not the most
important one. But there are connotations like "kostenfrei" (free of charge), "frei Haus"
(no delivery fees) or "portofrei" (no fee for stamps).
Citing the Duden:
"frei: ...
I try to translate the essentials here (do not expect to much, I do not know many of the
adjectives in English):
"frei: (1a) to be in freedom, independent, not bound to sth. ..., (1b) without tools ...,
(1c) to bound to [moral] norms ..., (1d) (chemistry, physics) ..., (2a) not disabled, not
impaired ..., ..., (3a) open, uncovered ..., (3b) naked ... 4a, unused, not taken by
others, 5. gratis ...
-frei: together with a noun it means that the described thing is not bound to sth/does not
depends on sth."
I think it is clear that also "frei" can be used as "gratis" but this is not the primary
meaning of "frei".
Is there a translation for "free software" in German ?
If yes, is it used by the native people ?
"Freie Software" this seems to be the most commonly used term. "Open Source Software" is
sometimes translated as "quelloffene Software" (mostly at Heise.de).
