Again, that is not the point.

I think you've missed my point ;)

The purported reason for changing the default environment was to make
it more attractive/familiar/easier for Linux users to convert to
Solaris - presumably for the advanced features and stability that come
with Solaris but are missing from Linux.

I'm well aware of how to fix the problem, but I shouldn't have to. And

Whether it is a 'problem' that needs to be 'fixed' is in the eye of beholder.

neither should people new to Solaris be forced to research how to do
this just to get core functionality to work. The whole reason that
they are trying out Solaris is for the features that are not supported
by the GNU userland, so giving them a GNU userland to make them "more
comfortable" defeats the whole point.

I think you're still blowing this way out of proportion.

And as has already been pointed out many times in the past, the functionality not supported by the GNU tools (acl, etc.) is likely not something that is frequently used by the target audience of the current releases.

In all the years that I have use GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, or other systems, I personally have never needed the functionality that the GNU tools do not support. And I imagine the same is true for much of the target audience.

Again, you must keep the current target audience in mind, and also keep in mind that the current releases are an in-development effort; the work is not complete, so there are still warts here and there.

But a modern, familiar user-land that lacks a small amount of functionality was viewed as preferable to one that has not been updated in a significant amount of time, and has a steep-learning curve.

So, instead of making it easier for the Linux users to move to Solaris
at the expense of the existing Solaris users, the only thing that has
happened is that we have made it more annoying and difficult for
everyone.

I disagree.

Cheers,
