I don't think they're saying they want to end the newsgroup.
Excerpt from tech support email I assume everyone just got:
"Complementary to the Exchange are a number of Palm programs and
resources dedicated to providing technical development support to the
Palm OS developer community. These include:
Palm's extensive searchable Knowledge Base
Documentation including Palm OS books, guides and tutorials
Developer forums, newsgroups and links to third party Palm OS websites
Access to source code
Ongoing Palm OS technical training"
You just won't be sending emails to devsupp anymore. I don't know about
anyone else, but I never did that anyway since the first couple of times
I tried (over 2 years ago, mind you) I didn't get the info I needed. I
think we'll still, for the most part, do things like we always have, but
they've just added a way to make some money off of those people who
can't/don't want to wait for someone on the list to get back them.
However, the question about whether or not the devsupp guys will still
monitor the list as closely is a good one.....

Subject: Does Palm want to end this news group?
I just got a new notification from Palm about the Developer Exchange.
Now, I realize Palm wants to encourage as many people as possible to use
the exchange.
But in their most recent bulletin, they made it sound like their goal is
to move everyone over and then kill the newsgroup.
Is this just a scare tactic?
Even if Palm stopped paying for their engineers like Heather, David,
Jim, and others to contribute to the list, I would still like to see the
newsgroup continue unofficially....
