Hello All
I am posting this as general information as to how I updated OS9.1 to
OS 9.2.1 on an unsupported mac; in my case, a 7600 / Sonnnet 400Mhz/1mb
Crescendo.
I successfully performed the installation but in a different manner than
posted. The key to me was to do a a "clean install" , using the OS9.1 CD
.Here is what I did
***Backed up original OS9.1 System Folder onto another drive
partition***
1.Perfomed a basic OS9.1 installation using Apple's installation CD
onto a clean,
5GB ,HFS+ partition on my main , 30GB IDE drive
2. Using GestLab / Mach Machine type , changed the gestalt # from 68 to
510
3. installed downloaded OS 9.2.1 update file ( selected basic
installation) right over the previously installed basic OS9.1 direct
from the CD
4. It successfully installed with no error messages
5. DID NOT HIT RESTART
6. Replaced downloaded system file with original OS9.1 system file.
7. Restart
Done! All A OK. Note ; on bootup welcome graphic displays OS 9.1
(normal with this procedure). I now have a "clean copy" , and I am in
the process of copying those applications/extensions/control
panels/classic files that I need and/or desire to run this partition
as my Classic bootup disk in OSX.
The reason I went thu this gyration was because I am certain that once
OS10.1 comes out, the Rempel or Sonnet patches will require OS9.2.1 to
load!
BTW .
checked "Finder" in the System Folder . Version displayed is 9.2.
Also, opened About this mac in Apple Menu, and 9.2 graphic displays
I have informed by a poster that using resedit, there is a way to
change the welcome screen to welcome to OS9.2. If I can get that working
I will post it too.
