Two of my friends both own Kodaks. One owns a DX3500 like yourself; I'm not
sure which model the other friend has (he did say it was a 3 mega-pixel).
Both have complained about seeing a purple fringe on the dark areas of the
photos they took. Also printing images in 8X10 from the DX3500, though it
was good, you could still tell a difference in quality (not as crisp as a 3
mega-pixel). If you buy a 3MP camera, at least you can be (99.9%) sure that
an 8X10 will be as good as a standard size photo. As well the prices for
all digital cameras are dropping (hooray!) so might as well wait for the 3MP
and up to come down in price a bit more instead of settling for a 2MP.

But you are right, if you are going to use the camera professionally then
get at least a 3 or 4MP camera (6MP if you have the $$$). If you're just
using it to take photos of your family in front of the pyramids then a 2MP
will suffice.

Installing any version of Windows on your computer is like getting ready for
a crash test and you're the dummy.
