As someone who was inside for three years (Tech support, Earthlink), this is quite untrue. A modem is a modem, someone taking up a modem at 31.2 is using just as much space as someone at 56k. And, as far as internet backbones go, the difference between the two is minimal. ISPs have had 56k capability for years now, they're not going to downgrade What the original poster has is a classic case of line noise, especially with the auth errors. v.90/v.92 56k connections are very touchy things, the slightest bit of interference will screw them up. The auth errors were happening when the line noise wasn't quite bad enough to prevent the initial connection at v.90 (v.90 is anything above 31.2, more or less. 41k, 43k, 51333, all v.90/v.92) but was enough to make it unstable. Now that it's back in the much more stable v.34, it stays running. At the moment, the major ISPs are needing money; even they're not stupid enough to irritate their customers into cancelling. An irritated customer is more likely to cancel or switch providers, not give them more money for DSL. Not to mention the profit margins are much thinner with DSL than with dialup at the moment. All in all, if you want your 56k back, you may need to have you interior wiring checked. It could also be a problem somewhere outside your house, in which case you're probably just stuck. You could try what's known as a "Home Run", where you run a dedicated wire from your phone box/NID (the telephone company box where all the wiring comes in) to your computer. It can be pricy depending on the distance, but its your best chance. Also can be a good thing with DSL as well. Switching providers probably won't help any if it's a problem with interior wiring, as the problem still exists. If it's a problem on the phone network somewhere, another providor (or even just another POP number with the same providor) might help. On the other hand, if it is interior wiring problems, you may well have similar problems with DSL. I did DSL support the last couple years at Earthlink and a good many problems were indeed caused by interior wiring.
