After 5 trials the OS will set your regions preference on iMac DV and newer
DVD equipped G4s. Once set it will warn you if a different region DVD is
inserted. Those fades and sync pulses suggest that the DVD is probably
being mis-read.

A China-made DVD/VCD/MP3/Dolby 5.1 player I bought is all-regions; reads
PAL (Region II) to display to multisystems TV too. I saw a half-size
version at Walmart for $50 and realized it was made by the same
manufacturer by the stamping on the top cover.
