One last question. Can I use the network I have in place on 10 BaseT and just plug in the DSL modem into the hub or do I need to get a router. Only four Macs need the Internet connection. I found a Mac compatible Linksys router (cable and DSL) with a four port switch in the $60 range. Should I buy it?
IF your DSL service permits multiple computers (and IP assignments for them) then a hub or switch will work just fine.
IF your DSL service only includes one IP, then you'll need a NAT Router, such as that LinkSys box.
Personally, I like using a NAT Router. The basic packet filtering fuctions, natural to NAT, form a decent 1st defense firewall.
Which brings up another point... You're moving off dial-up into the 24/7 connectivity world. The broadband networks are FULL of virus-infected PCs, that will hammer at your IP. So it is *essential* that all your machines have some sort of firewall active (unless you have the NAT Router) and that your PCs have *up-to-date* anti-virus software running.
