Its possible: In the past, I've purchased Mac's of the same model both with and without the mechanical hole; I could never figure out what the "logic" was, and just figured it depended on the cost of the actual drive. Another possibility is that the mechanical release has been hidden behind the face plate: I've seen Apple branded CD-ROM's with a face plate that Apple obviously put on after OEM that didn't give access to the mechanical release. An IT person once told me that they ordered Mac's that way for security reasons (i.e. nobody can walk by and take a CD out without logging onto the machine first), and that certain models came that way (i.e. he order certain models that had the covered mechanical release instead of models that have a hole for accessing the release).
