I didn't pay much attention to this until I found this blurb in Macaddict #92 page 21

Eject a stuck CD

1. Click and hold down mouse as soon as you start up
if no result
2. Restart immediately press Command-Option-O-F (Open firm ware).
at Terminal type eject cd and press Return. After CD pops out type mac-boot to continue booting up

    I have not looked at the CD drives on iMacs. but if they
    are like those on our legacy PCI Macs they have a small
    hole on the front. A large paperclip bent so that the
    end can be shoved into this hole can be pushed against
    the lever inside which will eject the disk.

I tried poking a paperclip into the little hole next to the CD drive with
no joy. Later, a coworker cracked open the case on the reluctant iMac and
extracted the CD, to my great pleasure. He said that after eyeballing the
CD drive up close, he's determined that the CD release button is
software-driven, as opposed to a mechanical release.

Is this actually the case?
