I didn't pay much attention to this until I found this blurb in Macaddict #92 page 21

Eject a stuck CD

1. Click and hold down mouse as soon as you start up
if no result
2. Restart immediately press Command-Option-O-F (Open firm ware).
at Terminal type eject cd and press Return. After CD pops out type mac-boot to continue booting up

I prefer to retrieve a disk any time anywhere. With or without power. A mechanical backup as I mentioned can save you from having to disassemble the actual drive to get the disk back..
