My belkin usb card arrived today. I plugged it in and
the system profiler not only detected the usb card
properly but this time it also put up 4 little boxes
for each usb port. (It only detected the card and knew
it was a usb card with the other card but I suspect
the other card is usb 2.0.

However it didn't work and there was no power going
out the usb bus. My little usb key did not light up. I
reinstalled the usb software with the card in place
that didn't seem to help.

I put the card in my pc, and my usb key lit up right
away.

I put the card back in the mac and this time it seems
to work although when I go in the system profiler, my
usb key is listed as being in all the usb ports (is
this normal) but my new drive was there complete with
files.

So good usb news for me and that update I installed
does seem to work on os 9.1

I suspect the problems I have had with the usb card
relate to how well the card is seated in the pci bus.
This is something terrible about the 8500 case! Has
anyone here come up with solutions to this? I'm
thinkimg maybe I could stick a metal bar across the
top where the screws should be to hold all the cards
in?

Hopefully that's a good sign then. I suspect all that
rumour is just some nonsense someone started for a
laugh, but I find it disturbing that people even think
it might be possible, and having used my mac for a
short time I'm beggining to see why people might
consider it!

Still think it's nonsense tho.
