Peter,  thanks for your comments.  There was no custom software from the ISP, just an 
instruction sheet (quite a good one, in
fact), so it seems this is a deliberate or accidental cut off by the ISP. They are 
located in Sydney, about 600 miles away,
but have POPs all around Australia.  It could be a Server fault, but so far, after 
several email complaints, I have had not
one word back.  If this situation continues beyond this weekend, I do have the option 
of  going to 'The Telecommunications
Industry Ombudsman', who is usually able to get a result.   But I would hate to have 
to switch ISPs a second time!
