For all those Listers who offered me help in overcoming the problem where I was being
cut off regularly on the hour at 5pm,
here is the solution. I use Zone Alarm firewall which, I discovered, had established
a range of IP addresses which were
allowed to ping my computer to make sure I was still on line. It eventually
transpired that my ISP suddenly began using an
IP address out of that range, found it was blocked - and so I found myself being cut
off for no apparent reason. When my ISP
eventually responded positively (it took them three weeks) they did at least point me
to the firewall as being the cause of
the problem, although in my view it was they who caused it by changing their IP.
I hope this might help others who find themselves mysteriously cut off from their ISPs
